Otago Polytechnic Student Village

Atmos Engineering Ltd was engaged to provide Air Conditioning and Heat Recovery Ventilation to the Otago Polytech student accommodation village.

The building has two wings containing 231 beds, and is the first student residential complex to be fully owned by the Polytechnic.

The innovative wooden construction of this $20 million project was extensively prefabricated off-site leading to a significantly faster on-site build time than a conventional building having steel beams and concrete floors.  The building's relatively lightweight construction and the wood's natural flexibility also give the structure significant earthquake performance benefits.

This is the first time that laminated timber has been used to create a multi-level building in Dunedin and is the largest laminated wood building by volume in the country, and the tallest of its kind. 

The made-to-order sections were assembled in Dunedin with no cutting or drilling required.  Services penetration through walls, floors and beams were formed off-site leading to fast track installation and less on-site co-ordination between trades.

The Student Village is an attractive addition to the Polytech campus and Atmos are pleased to have been involved in the construction of this ground breaking, landmark building.
